Week 5 - Response to Content
In this week's lecture, we watched the first act of the movie Rubber. I found this to be a very interesting movie and very artistic in the way in which it was filmed. I had taken an "Intro to Film" class my first year at the university in the United States, so I found this to be very intriguing. I really enjoyed the way in which the tire was introduced to the film, starting with a long shot over the desert area that gave the viewer a scene and background as to where the movie was taking place. The camera then had a close up shot of the tire slowly wiggling its way out of the ground. In a way, it signified a rebirth of some sort. The second shot that I believed to be very and interesting was when you could see the bird through the tire. It was as if the tire was looking at it through its hole, signifying the large group of human spectators looking through their binoculars. The shot looking down on the tire and bird signifies a looming death for the bird. All in all, I found the movie to be very interesting and very good in terms of the shots that the director created.

Facebook is a social networking site that I, as well as millions of other people around the world, visit multiple times a day. The Terms of Service are clearly stated, basically ensuring that no laws are to be broken while using the site, and that the website is not responsible for any of the things that you post on your Facebook page. It states clearly the safety policy that they will “do [their] best to keep Facebook safe, but [they] cannot guarantee it. [They] need [our] help to do that” (Facebook 2011). Also, the Terms of Service explains that when a user posts photos and videos, otherwise known as IP content, it gives Facebook permission and license to use those documents. This can be avoided by deleting the IP License which basically deletes all of the information that you have ever posted on your Facebook. The Terms of Service also states that advertising cannot be done through your statuses. Advertising can only be paid for through Facebook and it must be through Ads.

After researching about the causes of the British Riots, it almost seems as though it is a straight answer to say that the use of social media caused it. CBC News explains that rioters and looters ganged together and let each other know where to go by using BlackBerry messenger, text messages, Facebook, and Twitter. Although these are ways of enabling this kind of act, I would beg to differ with the statement that social media caused the riots. The phrase, "Guns don't kill people; people kill people" comes to mind when I think of this. Yes, social media does facilitate and create that connection with these people, but social media such as BlackBerry messenger cannot be blamed as completely as some are. Social medias are used to connect others. As CBC News states, "such tools are now a fact of life and simply alternative forms of communication- for good or evil." Social media a more common use of communication that leaves us dependent and something like a text or tweet about the riots is completely equivalent to sending a letter about it or using the word of mouth. There is almost no barrier between the two, making it impossible to put the full blame on social media for the riots in Britain.

Two internet communities that have faded from their popularity are MySpace and Friendster. MySpace is a social networking site that allowed you to be friends with other people, share photos, music, and watch videos. It had pages that could be dedicated to your artists and musicians as well. MySpace saw up to 115.7 million users. It began to decrease because of the birth of Facebook which took over the social networking scene. I would call MySpace a stepping stone to the social networking sites that we have now. It had all of the great ideas, it just wasn't managed as properly and had a lot of problems with privacy.

Friendster is also a social networking site mainly seen in Europe. It was originally an online dating website. It had about 115 million users but did plummet since the early 2000s due to technical problems and the distrust in the site. Also, new websites were established that surpassed Friendster and the online dating purpose of the website had since been left behind.

The rival between the Apple and IBM/Microsoft companies have always intrigued me. I think that the companies focus on such different things for being rivals when really, you can hardly compare the two. The Apple company was created by Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak who focused more on how the computer operated and really added their flashy flair to it. They mastered a thin PC that gained a lot of popularity, creating the MacBook, MacBook Pro, and Mac Book Air. Do not be fooled though, the Apple company does not reign over all. If you open your eyes when you enter a grocery store or other chain stores, you will notice a small logo in the bottom corner saying "IBM." IBM's computers were made for large companies and used a software called Microsoft. It is definitely a more work related type of system and cannot be compared to the Apple's PCs because they are just too different.

Week 2 - Tutorial Task
Part 1
This is called "The Twitter Song." I just found this on Youtube and I found it to be really funny. It is relevant to New Communication Technology because it relates to Twitter and the opportunities to tweet, retweet, and be retweeted. In many ways, Twitter is becoming a more and more popular website used to access news, and other worldly facts. I chose this video because of the incorporation of music and clever language used to explain that if you haven't been on or retweeted on Twitter, then you don't know what you're missing.
The link shown above is a link to an application analysis for the iStrobe/Strobe application. The Strobe is an application that creates "Performance Profiles" through measuring application performances in single and multi-system environments. It also measures where these applications are processed and how much time is spent doing so. The iStrobe allows users to access the Strobe application through a web brower. Thus, the link shown above will help the user achieve their goals when using the iStrobe application. It seems like a very knowledgable system that is used by one of the most prestigious computer companies, IBM.

Part 2
New communication technologies have become a very large part of my life from the very young age of 10 when I got my first AIM screen name. I used it to communicate with my fellow 5th graders and have been using the application for 10 years now. Following getting an AIM screenname, I got a Myspace page in middle school. Along with this, I got my first Nokia phone that only made phone calls. Since then, I have become an avid user of Facebook and Twitter and a highly involved iPhone user. The technology has become apart of my identity and it has come to the point where I could not imagine life without my Facebook or Twitter. Unfortunately, I have been away from my iPhone for almost a month now that I am studying here in Australia for the semester, and it has definitely made my social obligations quite difficult to fulfill. But, it is not as bad as I thought it would be.
For the most part, I started using different social networks, applications, and high tech mobile devices because I saw my peers using them and got influenced. Little did I know that something so small like signing up for a social network like Facebook would entail so much stress since then. My life has revolved around putting privacy settings on my family and family friends while still trying to maintain who I am as a person on my social networking page. I believe that privacy is one of the biggest issues when it comes to these networks because applications can be bought by business owners and school officials to view your profile without any privacy settings and ultimately get you into trouble in the long run. The risk of releasing your personal information is very worrisome and prevents myself and others from putting too much online.

Week 2 - Response to Content
The year I was born was the year that the “World Wide Web” began. Growing up in a very technological savvy society, it is hard to ever try and fathom what it would be like without our computer, television, and our phones. At some point in our lives, we have all had the classic flip phone that won’t hook up to the internet, the television that doesn’t have cable, and the computer that doesn’t have a web cam. But in fact, this is so much more than anyone could have ever imagined we would have back in 33 B.C. when the Sumerians were inventing their own inscriptions. The genealogy of communication has jumped leaps and bounds from where we started and is not quite imaginable in this day in age. This second lecture really opened up my eyes to the years and years of work that have gone into creating these complex devices that enable us to strive and achieve our goals each day. The question that was asked in today’s lecture was, if we are considered communication. I believe that the answer to that question is yes. We have invented, perfected, and used communication from the beginning of our time on Earth. We are communication through our words, body language, and script.

Week 1 - Tutorial Task
Hello all! My name is Emily Burns. I am an international student from the United States and I will be studying here at Griffith University for the next 4 months! I am a Communication: Public Relations major with a minor in Business Management at the University of Hartford in Connecticut and I hope to become an Event/Wedding Planner some day! I am very organized and I love seeing dreams come to life through weddings and events. I will be taking a lot of foundation classes in the Hotel and Event Management area and I am so excited to emerge myself in my studies! I find that this course will be really interesting because we will be exploring the technology that we use on an every day basis. I consider myself to be pretty savvy when it comes to online social networking sites and mobile phones, whether I really am or not we will see. I chose this course because of its relevance in today's society and the growing importance that is put on new communication technology. I cannot wait to start blogging!
Week 1 - Response to Content
There are many issues when exploring new communications technology. Many people rely on the internet and technology more than they ever have and because of this, there is a lot at risk. Fraud, hacktivism, cyber bullying and invasion of privacy are all major issues that have risen because of the over-dependence and trust in technology. Hacktivism especially has become a large problem with the internet. Groups of hackers have banded together to create cyber attacks into larger security systems to ‘laugh’ at the system’s security (Barlow 2011) and how easy it is to access confidential information.
Social networking websites allow a user to post all of their information and give you an option of privacy. Not chosing to keep your information private can lead to problems with your job, family, or even judgment from those that you have never even met. The best advice to those using new technology is to avoid putting too much information about yourself on the web, because in most instances, it never leaves.
Technology has developed very rapidly, especially in the past 20-30 years. I remember when I was around 9 years old, my parents got their first block of a cell phone. You could barely fit it in a small purse, let alone a pants pocket. Within a few years, you could find newer and more compact phones. Looking back and remembering my awe and wonder makes me laugh because I now couldn't even imagine living without my iPhone. This is a major example of a "new technology" quickly becoming an "old technology." Soon, there will be smaller, smarter, and more compact phones that might even wipe computers out altogether. You never know. I believe that that is when new technology becomes old technology: when something comes out that is an upgrade to the older version.
